Where practical, offer your horse hay approximately 20–30 minutes before exercise. Chewing long-stemmed forage stimulates saliva production, which naturally contributes to the stomach's buffering capacity, while the fibrous material forms a roughage mat within the stomach. This fibre mat helps to reduce the movement of acidic gastric contents onto the unprotected squamous (upper) region of the stomach during exercise, particularly at faster gaits.
